Hayden Christensen understands why Anakin Skywalker hates sand

Anakin Skywalker was born on Tatooine, the desert planet at the edge of the galaxy. During his courtship of Padme Amidala as a Jedi Knight, Anakin makes his disgust of sand known to her in the infamous ‘I don’t like sand’ dialogue. While largely considered poorly written, Hayden Christensen has found deeper meaning in the characters’ sentiments toward sand. He said:

“I have always understood his contempt for sand, you know. Growing up on a desert planet and that, that upbringing that he had, you know. He was a slave from a young age and, some bad memories there, for sure. And then going back, looking for his mom, and then all that stuff with The Tusken Raiders. So the sand represents a very sort of negative thing for him.”

The theory, hilariously posits, that Anakin Skywalker wouldn’t have fallen to the dark side of the force if he had liked sand, as opposed to his canon characterization. However, despite how ridiculous this theory could sound, Christensen has voiced his support in favor of the theory.

“Yeah, everything could have turned out a little different I suppose”

Not only did this get agreement from Christensen, but also from Obi-Wan himself, Ewan McGregor. Quipping, the Obi-Wan Kenobi actor said:

“Could’ve gone on a holiday on the beach, and not to the dark side”

The theory in question was a fanfiction idea explored by Star Wars YouTuber Star Wars Theory, The video has about 1.8 million views on YouTube. It explores in detail what Anakin’s life would have looked like if he had not only toned down his hatred for sand but had embraced the substance as one of the core obsessions of his life.
