Sheridan is known for telling character-driven stories that capture the attention of his audience. He has entertained his audience with works like Yellowstone, 1883, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, and many more. However, it looks like the screenwriter could return to one of his darkest movies as he gave his word to make the beloved series a trilogy.

No wonder, Taylor Sheridan is cherished so much by his fans. However, before he made a name for resurrecting the forgotten film genre, he was responsible for creating one of the most intriguing yet dark series. It is none other than the Denis Villeneuve-directed Sicario.

The film is considered to be one of the greatest films having a lasting impact on the box office. According to The Numbers, the first film grossed $84.2 million at the worldwide box office and its sequel grossed $76.3 million at the worldwide box office. However, after the release of the 2nd film, the news for a third film fell silent, but now it looks like sooner or later, the series is set to receive a third sequel, making it a trilogy.

During an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, Molly Smith, of the Black Label group opened up about how Sicario 3 is one of the projects that is very close to them and wanted to start working on it as soon as the 2023 Writer’s Strike comes to an end. She said,

We’re very close. It’s one of the projects where we’re ready to put the train on the tracks as soon as the strike ends and our path is cleared. So we’re very excited to get that whole band back together.

Smith added how Taylor Sheridan had always envisioned the film series as a “trilogy” and to keep his promise, he would indeed return for the third film.

Taylor [Sheridan] always envisioned it as a trilogy, so we have to close it out right. There’s no point in making it unless we can do justice to the true fans of Sicario.

Nevertheless, the third film is not releasing anytime soon as Josh Brolin has given the fans a mixed update on the sequel’s production and potential release date.

Josh Brolin Gives a Hazy Update on Sicario 3

Taylor Sheridan’s film venture started off immensely strong as he wrote the screenplays for various films including Sicario, the film was a huge hit, leaving room for the sequel. Sadly, the sequel could not match the popularity of the first film as it was immensely criticized by fans and critics.

Naturally, this resulted in the third film getting a break as everyone was hesitant to work on it. In 2022, Josh Brolin told The Hollywood Reporter how the third Sicario film is a priority and it is at the “forefront of all of our minds.” He said,

It’s very much at the forefront of all of our minds. It’s been written and it’s been rewritten. So it’s out there. We think it deserves a third one if we can make it in the way that we want to make it.

In a recent interview with The Playlistthe Deadpool 2 actor opened up they are “closer” to Sicario 3 but the film can not start until there’s an interesting enough plot for the film.

He said,

We are—we’re closer. Yes. Molly Smith, who is a really good friend, who is one of the producers of that on Black Label—I said something. I said, ‘It’s never gonna happen!’ and it kind of went everywhere. And she was very reactive, which I appreciated.

I appreciate reaction. They’re very much focused on wanting it to happen, but we won’t let it happen until there’s a story interesting enough to want to spend that kind of money on it.

However, there’s a piece of disappointing news because Brolin is unsure about Taylor Sheridan being “onboard or not.” Josh Brolin added,

Chris [McQuarrie] was involved for a while, but he’s not now. And I don’t know about [Taylor] Sheridan. I know him really well, but I don’t know if he’s onboard or not.

Nevertheless, Trent Luckinbill confirms that Sicario 3 will be released via ScreenRant and it will be titled Sicario: Capos. However, the film is “seemingly stuck in development hell,” reports the feature, with no release date in sight.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado can be streamed on Hulu.
