Martin Scorsese Defends Brendan Fraser’s Performance In Killers of the Flower Moon

In his interview with LADbible, filmmaker Martin Scorsese talked about Brendan Fraser’s role in Killers of the Flower Moon. The actor received critical acclaim for his work on The Whale, but Fraser was criticized for his over-the-top acting that felt very out of place in the epic western crime film. Scorsese defended the star:

We thought he’d be great for the lawyer, and I admired his work over the years. We had a really good time working together, particularly with Leo. Particularly in the scene where he says, ‘They’re putting a noose around your neck, he’s saving you dumb boy.’

The director claimed Fraser was “perfect” for his role, and his performance was outstanding in the movie. He further added:

“Really for us, when we heard that he brought the whole scene down on Leo it was perfect, and had that girth, he’s big in the frame at that time. He’s a wonderful actor, and he was just great to work with.”

Fraser enters the third act in the trial scene where he rises in his chair and yells, “This man is my client!” Fans were completely shocked with this part that Apple Original Films had to tweet a photo of the novel emphasizing the exclamation point in Hamilton’s line.

Killers of the Flower Moon is Brendan Fraser’s first theatrical movie after The Whale, so there was a lot of pressure to surpass his previous performance. This was also the actor’s career comeback after staying away from the spotlight for years.

Fraser spoke with The Howard Stern Show about his time working with Martin Scorsese. He revealed:

He’s a master cinema creator. He was a regular actor’s director. He moved furniture around himself. He likes to rehearse. He took suggestions and gave credit to the best idea, wherever it came from. He’s brilliant. He can solve multiple problems at the same time in an instant. There were four cameras, quadruple coverage, to shoot a courtroom scene that’s happening in real-time like an opera.”

Killers of the Flower Moon is now playing in theaters worldwide.
