From superhero gigs to action pieces to romance dramas — Tobey Maguire has shown his excellent versatility as an actor across multiple fields. Through his brilliant performances, he has also landed nominations in multiple award categories, including a nod for the Best Actor Golden Globe for his outstanding performance in the 2009 war-thriller Brothers.
In fact, that masterpiece is still regarded as one of his best works to date, and one of the biggest reasons why is because of all the emotions he perfectly channeled throughout the movie. If anything, Maguire might as well have never looked better than when he absolutely lost his mind with Natalie Portman in one of the most iconic scenes from the movie.
Tobey Maguire Killed it in One Iconic Scene from Brothers
Though the film failed to receive much love from critics and the general audience, its plotline was still as tremendous as ever. Starring Maguire as Sam, the Marine brother, and Jake Gyllenhaal as Tommy, the drifter brother serving time in prison, it saw the duo’s life turn tumultuous after Sam was presumed dead following a war in Afghanistan.
Since his brother was no longer around, Tommy vowed to take care of his wife, Natalie Portman‘s Grace, and their children. This follows with Tommy and Grace developing a personal relationship over time. But then Sam surprisingly returns home, and realizing that he had lost his wife to his brother makes him absolutely lose his calm.
In one of the most iconic moments from the movie, Tobey Maguire‘s Sam has an incredibly violent outburst. During this, he brutally trashes the entire kitchen and even goes ahead to harm himself out of rage after he realizes that he did everything in his power just to return home to his wife and children, but behind his back, his wife had gotten close to his brother.
Throughout the scene, the energy that Maguire channeled just to bring out his inner brokenness to explain how he truly felt on the inside is beyond commendable. In fact, he is close to not only breaking the entire kitchen but also bringing down the house with his screams before Gyllenhaal’s Tommy walks in to try and console him by embracing him in a hug.
Of course, this unarguably went down as one of the Spider-Man star‘s best performances to date, even scoring him the first and only (until now) Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. That’s not all; even fans can’t help but critically praise Maguire for just how incredibly he made this entire scene seem utterly realistic and believable.
Fans React to Tobey Maguire’s Perfectly Realistic Acting Chops
Although the film as a whole wasn’t met with the best reviews from critics and general audiences — standing at 64% from critics and 62% from audiences on RT — and its box office performance was somewhat okay as well (it made $43 million on a $26 million budget, as per Box Office Mojo), Tobey Maguire still received tremendous acclaim for his beyond-star-studded performance.
If anything, even after years since the film’s release, fans still find this one scene featuring Maguire’s raw display of his emotions absolutely breathtaking. Taking to commend him on YouTube for the same, here are their reactions to this iconic moment:
