Yoshihiro Togashi will go down in history as one of the most underrated mangaka ever. He had a glorious career but never reached his peak due to his recurring back pain. In the early 1990s, Yu Yu Hakusho was a pretty popular anime, but due to back pain, Togashi sensei had to wrap up his manga hurriedly, thus ending on a different note than he desired.

Hunter x Hunter almost reached the same popularity as the Big Three of anime. Unfortunately, it also suffered the same fate. Gon Freecs’ journey is most likely to remain unfinished. Fans can doubt whether he will reach the end of his journey, but they cannot doubt that he is Ging Freecs’ son. In an interview, Yoshihiro Togashi confirmed a horrifying aspect about Hunter x Hunter’s protagonist.

Gon Freecs is the protagonist of Hunter x Hunter. At the tender age of twelve, he left his village in pursuit of his father and became a hunter. At first, it seems like a simple plot, but Yoshihiro Togashi’s fantasy of a deep plot with die-hard battle sequences made Hunter x Hunter’s story darker as it progressed. Even the mangaka admitted that the protagonist is by no means a good boy and shares a particularly disturbing trait just like his father.

During an interview with Shonen Jump, Yoshihiro Togashi said,

“I knew he was different. As soon as he declares, he’ll abandon the one who raised him, to work as a hunter, we realized he’s not such a good boy after all. I thought, ‘Man, this guy is really edgy.’ (laughs) But since he has the blood of his father, a man who abandoned his child and became a hunter himself, I thought it was fitting for him to declare this. I thought he was a very natural character.”

Gon Freecs was always focused on his journey. Even though he wrote letters to his aunt, he did not visit them. He was always involved in something or the other. There is no hesitation in him regarding anything. If Gon decides to do anything, he will do it without fail. It is exactly like Ging Freecs, who decided to abandon his son and went through with it.

Gon Freecs’ Journey In Hunter x Hunter Will Remain Unfinished

Yoshihiro Togashi tried his best to get back to the study and resume his unfinished manga. But every time he wished to continue, the back pain would come back haunting him. The fans, even though they understood the situation, became disappointed with the numerous long hiatus of the manga. The Dark Continent arc has the potential to top the Chimera Ant arc, but there is no way of concluding.

After the Chimera Ant arc, Gon has lost his ability to use Nen. As fate would have it, he had to return to his home at Whale Village and resume his studies under Aunt Mito. The Dark Continent arc will see Ging Freecs and Kurapika taking the main stage. Even though there is no way of traversing through the story, Yoshihiro Togashi does not deny his fans a proper conclusion.

A few months back, he revealed the ending to his magnum opus. It is not clear whether the mangaka would return to his studio, but he wanted to give his best for the fans. There is no news of Togashi sensei halting his hiatus. Hunter x Hunter began its serialization in 1998 and is still being continued. If only Togashi sensei did not suffer from back pain, the fans could have enjoyed more of Gon Freecs.
