Fans expect him to sound manly like the previous episodes. Few have pointed how out that it might be due to his excessive smoking. When he saved Luffy from the Mountain Bandits and stopped Kizaru, he had a different voice. His current voice feels squeaky and old, even though he is only 50. The episode was great, but Benn Beckman’s voice has been criticized by the fans.
While Shanks was fighting Captain Kidd, his first mate was busy lighting his cigar. Most of the fans were engulfed within Divine Departure, but the few who noticed it were quick to react. Fans always want the best for One Piece and his voice was something that they were not prepared for.
Benn Beckman’s Voice Could Be Eiichiro Oda’s Doing
Benn Beckman made his first appearance when he was 38 years old. He might have been smoking from a young age, and currently, he is 50 years old. To send a message to the young generation, Eiichiro Oda might have relayed a subtle message with Beckman’s changed voice. Smoking for so long has caused his voice to change. Even though it was criticized, it goes perfectly with the scenario. It takes up real-life references since smoking can change a person’s voice.
Another possible reason could be Benn Beckman’s voice actor having some throat problem, or he might have been replaced. Eiichiro Oda is a genius and perfectionist. He does nothing as a fluke. So, it might be one of his doings that might have future references, or he wants to do social work by conveying a message to the youth, especially since the anime has a massive fan following.
