Christopher Reeve, the man known for portraying the role of Superman back in 1978 has a different tale to tell. Since Marlon Brando portrayed the role of his on-screen father, Reeve tells us that he did not enjoy working with Brando at all since he “just took the $2 million salary and ran”!
Marlon Brando Earned A Hefty Salary For Superman
With his iconic role as Vito Corleone in The Godfather, Marlon Brando found worldwide fame and recognition with notable roles to his name. With the 1978 film Superman, the director needed a strong authoritative figure.
Brando was the perfect actor for the role and he was cast in the role of Jor-El. As per Yahoo, the veteran actor received a paycheck of $3.7 million! Not only that, but the actor also negotiated a deal with the studio to bring in a certain amount of profit from the movie. With Superman being a massive success, the actor earned a total of $19 million for his portrayal of Jor-El.
Christopher Reeve, the lead actor of the 1978 film revealed that there was one actor that he didn’t like working with. Alleging that Marlon Brando simply took the salary money and ran, Reeve did not like the fact that Brando only appeared for around 20 minutes and received a paycheck of $2 million!

Christopher Reeve Did Not Like Working With Marlon Brando
Maybe it was jealousy or maybe Reeve does have a point but the actor didn’t like to work with Marlon Brando. As per an unearthed interview by The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher Reeve insinuated that Brando did not simply care about the movie!
“Not really. No. I had a wonderful time, but the man didn’t care. He just took the $2 million [salary] and ran. I don’t say this to be vicious, but I don’t worship at the altar of Marlon Brando, because I feel he’s copped out in a certain way.”
He further continued,
“What happened is the press loved him whether he was good, bad or indifferent; that people just thought he was an institution no matter what he did, so he doesn’t care anymore. I just think it would be sad to be 53, or whatever he is, and not give a damn, that’s all. He could be a real leader for us.”
With Brando and Christopher Reeve in the film, Superman received a rating of 7.4/10 on IMDB and a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic film that left a legacy behind is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
