Hugh Jackman has teamed up with Ryan Reynolds in his latest cinematic blockbuster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool & Wolverine, and things are escalating in this movie much quicker than we thought. This is because the film has also paved the way for the actors’ personal lives to sweep in through some really clever fourth-wall-breaking punchlines.
One of these very punchlines included a rather unexpected jab at the personal tragedy Jackman had only just gotten out of: His split with his wife of 27 years, Deborra-Lee Furness. Conversely, this trolling of the 55-year-old actor by Reynolds over his divorce has us seriously wondering: Did the Deadpool portrayer take things too far in his recent masterpiece?
One Deadpool & Wolverine Punchline Trolls Hugh Jackman on His Divorce
Besides delivering the promised uncountable cameos and 127 minutes of sheer cinematic bliss, this latest Marvel masterpiece has also brought forward some epic fourth-wall-breaking gags. If anything, it seems like the creators really didn’t hold back with this one without fearing the consequences.
This stands especially true when considering how Hugh Jackman‘s personal life was pulled into the middle in a rather hilarious joke Deadpool pulls while talking about Wolverine in the movie. Jeering at his yellow-spandex-clad partner, Wade says while introducing Logan:
He’s usually shirtless, but he let himself go since the divorce.
Needless to say, this comment was a direct dig at Jackman’s recent amicable divorce from Deborra-Lee Furness, the 68-year-old Australian actress who spent the last 27 years as Jackman’s wife.
Additionally, she is also the mother of his two children, i.e. 23-year-old son Oscar Maximilian Jackman and 19-year-old daughter Ava Eliot Jackman.
For the record, Jackman does appear shirtless in a few scenes, diving further into the movie. That’s not all; there are some serious quirky jokes about Ryan Reynolds‘ home and nods to his wife Blake Lively, along with Wade even making fun of Jackman’s musical career in a fourth-wall-break moment, saying, “He’ll sing the second act of ‘The Music Man’ without a warmup.”
But adding a heartbreaking element from The Greatest Showman‘s life seems like a step taken too far by Reynolds, especially since the 55-year-old actor had actually been married to Furness for nearly three decades.
Personal POV: Was Using Hugh Jackman’s Divorce as a Gag a Good Idea?
Throughout the years, ever since the couple tied the knot back in 1996 (a year after meeting), Jackman and Furness had been highly shipped as one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples of all time.
For 27 stunning years, the pair went as strong as ever, being each other’s backbone through the rough and tough course of life. This was why it came as a devastating surprise to many when they announced their “amicable” split in September 2023.
As per PEOPLE, the couple’s shared statement stated: “Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
All of this being put out there, it may have been a bit too personal of a dig to include such a private element of someone’s life as a hilarious punchline in an R-rated movie. But at the same time, Jackman himself seemingly allowed it. That said, fans might as well take it as a joke and have a good laugh about it.
