Michael Fassbender is a great actor with an incredible career performing interesting characters. Fassbender established himself as a Hollywood star in 2011 by portraying compelling Mr. Rochester in Cary Fukunaga’s film Jane Eyre.
Then, he portrayed a wide range of leading characters, including Magneto in Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. He also took on the role of Carl Gustav Jung in David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method and played an Irish rogue pretending to be a British spy in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire.
Critics have praised him as a skillful intense actor because he has always delivered exceptional performances. His talent has granted him the opportunity to be part of several outstanding films that garnered plenty of acclaims.
Fassbender always gives credit to Steve McQueen who has helped him to reach where he is today. But in one of his movies, the actor had the most unusual experience.
Steve McQueen Ordered Michael Fassbender to Take Off His Clothes
Michael Fassbender never fails to take that one name who helped him shape his career. And that name is Steve McQueen because he is Fassbender’s greatest cheerleader.
Director McQueen gave him that first big role as Bobby Sands in Hunger and then cast him in his next two films. After the actor did Shame (a s*x addict drama) with McQueen, the director linked Fassbender to Marlon Brando and said that there is a “fragility and a femininity” to him, but also “masculinity that can translate.”
In an interview with Irish America, Michael Fassbender said that he had an unusual experience when the director asked him to take off his clothes. To tackle the challenge, he even gave Fassbender a mantra that he still uses to date:
“The problem is, we feel a lot of pressure about looking silly or appearing weak, whatever that means, or being a failure. You have to keep in your head: what’s the worst that can happen? I’m trying to tell a story – what’s the worst that can happen? You fall flat on your face, then hopefully you get back up again and go for it again and try something else. We’re all going to die one day. I’m stealing that off Steve [McQueen]; it’s what he’d say when he ordered me to take my clothes off. ‘WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE ONE DAY!’”
This is the self-boosting trick that Fassbender follows whenever he prepares for a risky or humiliating scene. But besides this, do you know there was a scene that the actor did in McQueen’s film which he dedicated to his mother? Now, it is unknown whether this is the same scene where McQueen ordered the star to strip off his clothes.
Michael Fassbender Stripped His Clothes in Shame and Dedicated the Performance to His Mother
Michael Fassbender stripped off his clothes in the 2012 movie Shame and dedicated the performance to his mother. Speaking to Vulture (via Celebretainment), Fassbender revealed that his mother has always been offended that women usually take their clothes off on screen. He said [on being nude in films and full frontal nudity]:
“To be honest with you again, I think it’s the idea of male frontal nudity. It just baffles me: Women can parade around naked all the time, but the guy conveniently has his pants on. I remember my mom always complaining about that to me, saying, ‘This is such bullshit, it’s always the women who are naked.’ So I did this one for you, Mom!”
Watch Shame on Prime Video, where Fassbender portrayed the role of Brandon Sullivan — a businessman by day and playboy by night.
