It seems that despite Albus Dumbledore being everyone’s beloved wizard for his joyous and grandfather-like persona, Michael Gambon’s portrayal of the character got an extraordinary amount of flack in the Harry Potter films. Taking over the role from the late Richard Harris, as Gambon appeared in the films, his distinct and memorable depiction of the character became a topic of debate among fans.

However, despite drawing mixed reactions from audiences and critics, Michael Gambon was successful in pleasing Richard Harris with his performance. Following Gambon’s tragic demise in 2023, Harris’ son Jared Harris reflected on the actor’s ability to captivate people and even defended his approach to the character.

Michael Gambon’s Approach to Dumbledore Didn’t Sit Well with Fans

Following Richard Harris’ exit from the Harry Potter franchise after the first two films, Michael Gambon took over the responsibility to helm the character for the rest of the films. However, the actor’s portrayal of Albus Dumbledore became a topic of debate among fans especially due to the shift in characterization.

While Richard Harris’ Dumbledore is known for his gentle and wise demeanor, exuding a sense of calm and dignity, Michael Gambon’s portrayal brought a different energy to the role. Leaving behind the standard set by Harris, that many fans grew attached to, Gambon brought a more assertive and sometimes even abrasive feel to the character.

For instance, Michael Gambon’s portrayal of Dumbledore’s confrontation with Harry in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was particularly noted for its stern and intense tone, diverging significantly from the more gentle mannerisms of Richard Harris’s Dumbledore. The omniscient Headmaster flinching when the Goblet of Fire spits out Harry’s name was undoubtedly a bit too much for fans.

Although this shift in portrayal gradually eased with the evolving nature of the films, which became darker and more complex as the series progressed, Michael Gambon still remained a highly debatable part of the franchise. People often felt that Gambon’s interpretation lacked the warmth and wisdom that defined Richard Harris’s portrayal of Albus Dumbledore.

Richard Harris’ Son Defended the Harry Potter Star and Paid His Tribute

However, despite the inevitable changes brought to the franchise as a result of recasting, which birthed the heated debate surrounding Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore, Richard Harris‘ son held a different opinion about his father’s successor. Following Gambon’s unfortunate demise in 2023 due to pneumonia, at the age of 82, Harris’ son Jared Harris paid his tribute to the late actor.

Speaking with DailyMail, the 62-year-old Chernobyl actor defended Michael Gambon’s portrayal of Albus Dumbledore by calling him a “brilliant” actor. Appreciating the dynamic range Gambon brought to the role previously helmed by his father, Harris noted how the late actor did justice as Richard Harris’ successor.

A brilliant actor. I saw him on stage several times, and he lives unforgettably in my memory. He took over Dumbledore from my father, which was fitting as he overtook Brando as my father’s favourite actor.
