Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie starred in Martin Scorsese’s 2013 black comedy film The Wolf of Wall Street. The film is based on Jordan Belfort’s (played by DiCaprio) memoir of the same name, chronicling his career as a wild fraudster, a life of s*x and drugs, and his eventual downfall. Robbie played Naomi Lapaglia, Belfort’s wife at the time.

DiCaprio is known for his love for vaping in real life and also constantly smokes between takes. However, he lost his e-cigarette one day after filming a s*x scene with Robbie. The actress talked to The Talk in 2015 about the awkward anecdote and where he managed to find it.

The actress recalled that DiCaprio had kept his e-cigarette under the pillow before shooting the scene. Later, he couldn’t find it. They both started searching for it on the bed when suddenly Robbie realized that it was in her butt crack. This led to an awkward moment between her and DiCaprio and she believed that he threw the e-cigarette away after finding it. She said (via LadBible),

“I don’t know if he wants me telling this story, but we’d just finished this scene and Leo always carries an e-cigarette with him, like all the time. So he hid it under a pillow while we were shooting. Afterwards … he’s like, ‘Where is it? Where did I put it? I had it right here’.

I was looking around with him – both still sitting in this bed – and then I went, ‘Oh, um, it’s literally, like, in my butt crack. I’m sitting on it. I am so sorry’. He probably threw it away. It was so embarrassing.”

The anecdote is hilarious yet weird and Robbie must have felt incredibly embarrassed by the whole situation. Nonetheless, audiences loved their chemistry in the film and it became a box office hit. The duo later reunited for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street was Margot Robbie’s first big film in Hollywood. Landing a film alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and being directed by Scorsese was something unprecedented for an actress like her and she wanted to make an impression but was highly skeptical about it.

In an interview with BAFTA, Robbie revealed that she thought no one would ever notice her and all eyes would be on DiCaprio for the whole film. She believed that she’d just ‘slip under the radar’ and not get any Hollywood opportunities after the film. She said,

“Honestly, I know this sounds silly now, knowing how big the movie became. I thought, ‘No one’s gonna notice me in this film. It kind of doesn’t matter what I do in this film because everyone’s gonna be focused on Leo and everything, and I’ll just kind of slip under the radar.”

The film became her breakthrough role and Robbie has since gone on to become an A-List actress in the industry, with 2023’s Barbie becoming the most successful film of her career. Fans can watch/rent The Wolf of Wall Street on Apple TV+.
