Fans interpret that Aang and Katara had PTSD from the genocides of their own people. He also suffers from anger management issues. Aang was twelve when he learned he was destined to save the world, and this caused a tremendous amount of stress to be put on him when other people began to treat him differently.

Aang also suffers from survivor guilt, an illness where someone is in an accident where people died, and since they survived, they feel guilty and even responsible for the deaths of others. In this universe, the only reason Aang survived the attack of the Fire Nation on the Air Nomads was because he ran away. Since he was the only one to survive, he felt responsible for their deaths.
