Many people have had several things to say about Tom Cruise. Some people admire his voracious disposition concerning the film business, while others detest the controversial aspects of his life. Most co-stars are quick to sing praises in his name. A few are interested in divulging his personal affairs. Over the years, he has made headlines for a multitude of reasons. However, one incident, recounted by his Risky Business co-star, underscored his suggestive side.

Details from Curtis Armstrong’s time working on the production of the 1983 Cruise film were made public in his memoir Revenge of the Nerd. Here, the 69-year-old actor revealed his first instance of meeting the Top Gun alum, Cruise’s purported behind-the-scenes salacious shenanigans, and the then up-and-coming star’s on-set affair with co-actor Rebecca De Mornay.

Curtis Armstrong’s Account Of Tom Cruise’s Affair With Rebecca De Mornay

In a chapter excerpt obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Curtis Armstrong stated that the rumors about Tom Cruise‘s sexuality “were utterly mystifying.” This was because the former had witnessed Cruise’s romantic escapades (with women) during the production of Risky Business. Whether it be his delayed yet “intense affair” with De Mornay or a line-up of several girls outside of his room, Armstrong affirmed that much like most young individuals, love (among other things) was in the air for Tom Cruise.

Of the purported on-set affair, Armstrong stated:

“It’s no secret that Tom engaged in an intense affair during the shooting with De Mornay—who, at 23, managed to maintain her inaccessible, s*xual mysteriousness under any circumstances. […] Their romance was some time aborning. Part of the delay was caused by the presence of Harry Dean Stanton, who was involved with Rebecca.”

In the early 1980s, Rebecca De Mornay started dating actor Harry Dean Stanton. The latter’s presence, to Tom Cruise, seemingly felt similar to a “guest overstaying his welcome.” At least that is what Curtis Armstrong thinks the Mission: Impossible star felt about De Mornay’s then-partner. In his memoir, this is how the Revenge of the Nerds alum detailed the unusual entanglement:

“I suspect that most of Harry Dean’s great qualities were lost on Tom, who, I think, was beginning to regard him as a guest overstaying his welcome. It must have been a little galling to have your heart set on f—ing your co-star, and just when you think you’re starting to make headway, her significant other comes popping up.

Given her relationship, it felt that De Mornay couldn’t agree to any advances from Cruise. Armstrong said the actress had become “inaccessible.” According to Curtis Armstrong, the Jack Reacher actor reportedly resorted to other means under these circumstances. As has been described in the memoir, “[Tom Cruise] started cutting a wide swath through the local talent.”

What the Moonlighting star saw amused him greatly.

Armstrong’s memoir sang praises of Cruise’s exceptional work ethic and talent. However, it also humorously depicted his wild and suggestive… explorations (for lack of a better word). This side of his wasn’t easily discovered. The memoir remarks, “Not that I noticed right away. He self-identified as a born-again Christian.” One anecdote delved into the Better Off Dead star’s intriguing interaction with Tom Cruise.

Curtis Armstrong frequently asked Cruise if he would like to join his co-stars for a drink at the bar. The latter refused the offer, claiming he had “an early call tomorrow.” He disclosed that he intended to work out, memorize his lines, and study a little of the Bible before sleeping.

This is what he had said. Armstrong, though, contends that it might not have been accurate. What the 69-year-old actor and singer eventually discovered one late night was the following:

“Returning late one night, I found three or four young girls […] lined up in the hall outside of Tom’s room. […] Tom’s door opened, and another girl came out, adjusting her hair and taking off down the hall, while the first girl in line slipped into Tom’s room. This was a young man who knew something about time management and understood how to successfully juggle Bible study and bl*w j*bs.”

The title “Risky Business” appears appropriate for a project with behind-the-scenes anecdotes that resemble situations like this. Jokes apart, stories like these are frequently birthed from most Hollywood productions. Actors are notorious for making news with their on- and off-set love affairs. Alas, the romance between Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay fizzled out with their breakup in 1985.
