Sir Ian McKellen has portrayed several fictional characters during his theatrical run, but his performance of John Falstaff turned tragic when he accidentally fell off the stage. On Monday, the actor was performing Player Kings at the Noël Coward Theatre in London.

During a particularly intense battle scene with the characters of  Prince of Wales and Henry Percy, the actor lost his balance and fell off the stage. As the audience members were evacuated and the actor swiftly taken to the hospital, some eyewitnesses claimed the actor was crying out in pain after his dreadful fall.

While the extent of his injuries has not been revealed, his injuries do not seem as serious, given one audience member account (via Marca.com),

Furthermore, as per BBC, a theatre spokesperson reported the actor is in good spirits and will make a speedy and full recovery. Although the upcoming show next Tuesday has been canceled, the actor is reported to return to the stage next Wednesday.
