Everyone appreciates a good celebrity cameo in their favorite TV shows and movies. The same happened with Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017). News broke months prior to the film’s release that the legendary Sir Elton John would appear for a brief period in the film.
But according to Kingsman star Taron Egerton, the legend was initially supposed to appear in the 2014 iteration, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Unfortunately, due to scheduling issues and other reasons, Elton John couldn’t take up the role in the first film. However, it’s a good thing, since John’s role in the 2014 movie would have weakened his appearance in the 2017 sequel.
Elton John’s Cameo in the Second Installment of Kingsman
Elton John’s substantial cameo in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) was quite weird for the audience to handle. Although it was known from early on that the legend would appear in the Super Spy sequel, fans barely expected the result to be such.
In the first movie, the villain Valentine is seen kidnapping many celebrities. Thus, in the sequel Julianne Moore’s Poppy felt it would be rude to not follow in that footsteps. Therefore, the actress captures Elton John and holds him as a hostage in her 1950s hideout paradise.
Used as her entertainment, Elton John was forced to play his classics by dressing up in versions of his classic costumes. Although this particular cameo from the legend appeared weird to many fans, it was more important than ever. The role was something that director Matthew Vaughn and John had discussed for years.
Elton John Originally Had a Role in Kingsman 1
Apparently, the discussion between Elton John and Matthew Vaughn began when the director was planning to make his first movie in 2014. Back then noteworthy celebrities, including David Beckham and Adele, were rumored to have cameos in Kingsman: The Secret Service. But the director specifically wanted John.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s discussion with Kingsman star Taron Egerton, Elton John was originally supposed to appear in the first installment.
“He’s such an icon that you almost forget he is a real person. I still haven’t processed that I met him. He was originally supposed to be in the first film. Matthew wanted him and for whatever reason he wasn’t able to do it or wasn’t sure he wanted to.”
Even the legend himself admitted how he was approached by the director for the first movie. At the world premiere of the Kingsman sequel via ScreenRant, John stated,
“I was supposed to be in the last one, but I turned it down, and then I saw it and I thought “I wish I’d have been in it” So they asked me to be in this one – Matthew said to be in this one – and I jumped at the chance.”
But we believe it’s better that Elton John appeared in the second installment. His appearance was highly anticipated by fans and was also deemed an iconic one. And certainly, his appearance in the first film would have weakened his appearance in the sequel, for celebrity cameos weren’t repeated in the trilogy.
