After 20 years director Alexander Payne reunited with Paul Giamatti with the 2023 flick The Holdovers. Giamatti won his first Golden Globes in 2005 Sideways for his excellent performance as Miles Raymond in the Payne movie and has six nods so far. With his 2024 win the 56-year-old collects his third Golden Globes. “Surely this is the first time this award has been given to an actor who has played a man who smells like fish,” Giamatti said in his acceptance speech. “Thank you Golden Globes,” he continued.

“Thank you to Alexander Payne- Alexander the Great who for some mysterious reason continues to have enormous faith in me and why I don’t know why. Uh, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Dominic Sessa, I love you very much. David Hemingson, Focus Features, the entire cast and crew in Boston Beantown, fantastic people one and all. Uh, I want to say I love my beautiful girlfriend Clara Wong, why you bother with me I don’t know. Why? Uh, and I guess, I want to give a shout out to my son Samuel who recently graduated from college.”

Giamatti shines above his fellow nominees including Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Timothée Chalament (Wonka), Matt Damon (Air), Joaquin Phoenix (Beau Is Afraid), and Jeffery Wright (American Fiction). Giamatti’s win was special to many fans, of course, the actor was also over the moon as he candidly joked on stage while accepting the award about the stairs. But metaphorically, his comments on the stairs hunting his knees perfectly fit his dedication to his characters over the years. No wonder, Giamatti has been a promiscuous actor with an astounding list of movie and television credits to his name. Hailing the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s decision to award the actor, fans have taken to X to express their good wishes to the actor.

Giamatti got more appreciation from fans for his beautiful dedication to the teachers. “It’s a movie about a teacher, I play a teacher in it. My whole family, they’re teachers all of them going back Generations. Teachers are good people, got to respect them. They do a good thing it’s a tough job so this is for teachers as well thanks guys thank you,” he said in the speech. The actor also teased that he’ll be in John Wick 5, but as of now, it’s hard to speculate whether it’s a joke or has validation in his statement.
