According to Cage, he was there with Depp, during the initial phase of his career and has seen all the ups and downs the actor has endured. During an interview, Cage said,

“The true story is that we were already friends. I was living in an old building in Hollywood called the Fontenoy, and I think I ultimately rented the apartment to Johnny, and he started living there. He was at the point in his career where he was selling pens or something to get by.”

It was not that the actor could not fend for himself but Cage renting the apartment out to him helped ignite a friendship between the two massive actors. Further, the Renfield actor said that he was the one who suggested Depp opt for acting as a profession. Cage recalled his conversation with Depp and said,

“But anyway, we were good friends, and we would play Monopoly, and he was winning a game, and I was watching him and I said, ‘Why don’t you just try acting?'”
