It is easy to forget that the galaxy the game is set in is torn by war and the remnants of the past are now scattered across distant planets. Despite being deceased for centuries, it is still a sight to see behemoth creatures lying in the field after what seems like a deadly battle against soldiers of old.

It is interesting to see the developers take assets and story beats from the previous game and reference them in the sequel for legacy players to notice and to strike fear in the hearts of newer players. The First Galactic War took a toll on the galaxy and it may not be convenient to clean up older messes but it is much easier to leave it as it is as a reminder.

The developers came up with countless enemy factions, and among them are the Illuminate which was said to be wiped out. However, some players are beginning to feel paranoid about the potential comeback of this enemy faction, especially after recent major operations.

After Operation: Enduring Peace, the Ministry of Truth weaponized a new substance known as Dark Fluid that originated from the Illuminate. The operation resulted in the destruction of planet Meridia and the decimation of the Terminid as a black hole opened and swallowed the planet whole.

Shades of the first Galactic War will never disappear and the universe has a long way to go to recover. Perhaps it is for the best for players to see random bones of dead creatures to remind them what war can bring.

Helldivers 1 was a simple top-down shooter and the developers made significant overhauls to the gameplay that expanded the lore. The developers are using the past to help the present and it served the sequel well.
