Helldivers 2 was embroiled in controversy for the last couple of days after it was announced that players on Steam would need to link their accounts to a PlayStation Network account if they wanted to continue playing the game. This mandate did not go well for the game, Arrowhead, and Sony.
Sony and the developer were at the receiving end of the heat from the game community and were heavily criticized for this move months after the game’s launch. The game was review-bombed, which was saddening, but Arrowhead Game Studios is using it to make Helldivers 2 more satirical.
A Cape Based on the Recent Helldivers 2 Controversy
Helldivers 2 was a smash hit upon release, and the sales and reception from fans and critics prove that. The game broke several records on Steam, even becoming the best PC launch from PlayStation, but it all came crashing down with the Steam and PSN account linking requirements.
Players were enraged, and they started to review bomb the game, taking the once “mostly positive” review to “mostly negative.” The community wanted the developer and Sony to know that they were not happy. This worked as PlayStation backtracked on the account linking requirement.

The developer is now making the best of this controversy. Helldivers 2 game director and Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt shared a picture of the game’s review chart on X/Twitter and said that the negative review blocks will be turned into a cape, and the community is excited.
This shows that the developer is focusing on the future of the game and wants to make the experience more “satirical” and exciting for the players. The post reads, “Also, the accidental cape design is pretty cool. From a community member.” He also revealed that the team is working on the cape and is “taking about a good name for it right now.”
Fans Have Some Suggestions for the New Cape
The backlash on the requirement was hard to deal with for Arrowhead Game Studios and Pilestedt personally, who was taking the blame for it all. But since it’s all good now, the developer is working on the game once again.
The new cape idea has fans excited, and they want it in the game as soon as possible. They have also been suggesting some names for it. One player said that the cape could be called “Held the Line,” while another fan added that it could be called “Voice of Democracy.”

User Hackband said it can also be called “Will of the People,” and honestly, these are pretty good names. User Sats Godzilla suggested that it could even be a skin, and another user said, “We NEED this cape! It’s part of the in-game lore.”

Some players also took a dig at Sony and the now-scraped requirement, saying that the cape should only be given to those who link their PSN accounts to Steam. Fans have said that they would “proudly” wear the cape, and it could even be used as a major order reward.
