One of the fans posted on Reddit, stating that Joel is doing a lot of stress testing to get things just right for gamers. Almost a month since the title was released, and players are still not sure of what Joel is up to.

This fan goes on to mention that one of the orders given by the Game Master, Joel, in which players had to capture Veld Major Order, was also a test to check how long players take to capture planets.

Joel seems to be raising the difficulty levels with the ongoing challenges involving Heeth and Angels Venture planets, until players start failing to complete them, as per this fan’s theory.

In a recent interview, it was confirmed that an actual developer has the job title of Game Master. Arrowhead CEO, Johan Pilestedt, revealed that the Game Master has “a lot of control over the play experience.” Pilestedt also revealed that the title took a lot of inspiration from Dungeons and Dragons.

Every time the going gets easy for players, Pilestedt explained that the Game Master had to “grease the wheels for the enemy a few times.” To not let players take over planets far too easily, the Game Master was said to be giving the Automatons “a bit of reinforcement“.

One fan who commented on the Reddit post, theorized how Helldivers 2 players could still be in the learning phase of the game’s narrative.

The theory mentions that the Game Master might still be testing players with different incentives to assess player strengths, and the changing behavior among them.

The fan went on to state there could be multiple campaigns for players to take up together as a way to check if they prioritize between rewards and the type of missions. This will “establish some baselines for player behavior moving forward“.

Another Reddit user commented that players need to stop the Game Master from taking planets in adjacent sectors, which could prevent Joel from launching a sneak attack. As a reply to that comment, another user mentioned it would be rather interesting to see the number of enemies added to the game.
