Only in Hollywood will one find a show about Supermen actors holding a group event at a pre-decided time, no matter how weird it may sound to those looking in from the outside. But the weirdness of Superman star, Sam Daly, and his extended DC family will have to wait because Henry Cavill has an appointment.
For the longest possible time, Henry Cavill had a terrible run-in with fans and critics when he fell off his tower shortly after the release of Justice League in 2017. The Witcher Seasons 2 and 3 aggravated the situation. Argylle almost closed the books on him forever. No one can pull off such a bad collection of horrible projects other than Nicolas Cage.
And yet, Henry Cavill still stands rock steady with more projects lined up than the average actor. The roster that the actor has in development would make many in the industry balk. Even though it might be a long time since the manifestation of his Warhammer 40K universe and the Highlander reboot, Cavill is rightfully owed his long-overdue credit.
Brandon Routh Finds Sympathy in Superman Legend
In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Sam Daly, the son of veteran Superman: The Animated Series voice actor Tim Daly, acknowledged the weirdness of it all. However, after the initial pleasantries were out of the way and he justified the involvement of Brandon Routh and Dean Cain in The Daly Show, the conversation took a turn toward a more serious tone.
CBM aptly pointed out the missing link, Henry Cavill, and commented:
“Don’t get me wrong, I think Henry Cavill is a great Superman, but I always felt that Brandon Routh got a raw deal because, unfortunately, he was in Superman Returns and they had to distance themselves from it.”
Sam Daly concurred:
“As do I. I think Brandon was an amazing Superman. Not only did he look the part well, but he was a great Clark and a great Superman. It’s weird how when the higher-ups are relaunching something, you have to remove yourself from the last one. I’ll certainly never forget Superman Returns.”
Although there is truth to the above exchange, it would only be a few more years until the public humiliation, exile, and stone-walling of Henry Cavill would make Brandon Routh’s “raw deal” look like an angelic act.
Superman’s Legacy Lives on in James Gunn’s DCU
As James Gunn takes hold of the reins of a new and formative DC universe, the fans wait with bated breath for the moment Gunn finally unveils the finished roster. For now, however, Gunn is moving full steam ahead on Superman with David Corenswet in the lead role, ready to take on the mantle from Henry Cavill.
As the legacy of Superman lives on in mainstream media, fans can only hope that the past controversies coloring the image and reputation of the superhero in Superman Returns and Zack Snyder’s DCEU trilogy can be relieved of public ridicule.
Superman premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025.
