Henry Cavill Has Passed On Two Superman Roles

Prior to embarking on his distinctive rendition of Superman, J.J. Abrams was previously immersed in the development of a venture titled Superman Flyby. According to Den Of Geek, this endeavor promised a remarkably unconventional portrayal of Clark Kent. Interestingly, there existed test footage featuring Henry Cavill donning the iconic suit. However, this particular movie found itself amidst the ranks of numerous canceled DC projects.

Preceding the very inception of Superman Returns, this project was already in the works. Unfortunately, the script’s premature exposure to the public triggered an overwhelming wave of disapproval from fans. Consequently, the curtains were drawn on Superman Flyby, and since then, mere glimpses of the film have trickled into the public domain via leaked footage and conceptual artwork.

Evidently fueled by a resolute determination to claim the role of Superman, Henry Cavill’s persistence shone through. Even in the aftermath of the Superman Flyby project being abandoned, he persisted and once more vied for the iconic role during the developmental stages of Superman Returns. In its initial stages, the film was set to be helmed by McG, who conducted auditions with multiple actors, including Henry Cavill, in pursuit of the perfect fit for the role (according to Variety).

Nevertheless, McG withdrew from the director’s chair for Superman Returns, leading to the reins being handed over to Bryan Singer. Under Singer’s guidance, the casting decision veered towards Brandon Routh for the role of Superman, given Routh’s striking resemblance to a youthful Christopher Reeve, aligning seamlessly with the notion of a continuation to the Reeve-era films.

Henry Cavill Has Turned Down Other DC Roles As Well

Interestingly, Henry Cavill’s trajectory almost led him into another cinematic endeavor intended as the inaugural step into a DC universe. This venture was none other than Green Lantern, a film that ultimately floundered at the box office. While Ryan Reynolds ultimately donned the mantle of Hal Jordan, also known as Green Lantern, Henry Cavill was among the actors under consideration for the role.

Under the dark reimagining orchestrated by Christopher Nolan for Batman, the search for the central character spanned various candidates, including Cillian Murphy. However, it was Christian Bale who ultimately secured the role and graced the screen in a trilogy commencing with Batman Begins. Nevertheless, Henry Cavill’s connection to the role was not as imminent as some other notable instances of roles slipping through his grasp.
