Fans highly anticipated Henry Cavill’s beginning of the post-Superman phase as most were curious about what the actor might bring to the table. The actor’s DC tenure was over as James Gunn revamped the landscape of the DC Universe casting new actors for the frontline characters.
Cavill also departed from his celebrated Netflix series The Witcher. Of course, leaving two big roles was not threatening to his career as he has a line up of slates keeping him busy as ever but his upcoming release Argylle has failed to impress the critics, as the movie received an overall poor Tomatometer score.
Henry Cavill’s Post-Superman Movie Failed to Impress Critics
Henry Cavill has certainly redefined a few roles, including Superman and Geralt of Rivia, but what’s beyond these roles that made him incredibly famous? Cavill appeared as the title character in Matthew Vaughn’s most recent release, Argylle. However, the PG-13 action comedy was not received well by critics.
The Jason Fuchs (I Still See You) scribed movie has an ensemble cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson intended to create an action thriller with astonishing style. For Vaughn, the movie was an ode to 80s action thrillers Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.
Argylle was made with a whopping $200 million production budget. In the domestic release (United States and Canada), the movie is projected to gross $15–20 million in its opening weekend. To match the cost of the film, the movie must gross over $500 million worldwide. This poses a serious question for the actor and the movie as the Argylle was rated with only 37% on Rotten Tomatoes in the movie’s initial UK release.
Making Of Argylle As Stylistic Action Thriller With Dance Numbers
Making Argylle a stylistic spy action thriller was not easy. Cavill recalled working very hard on the choreography. Fans have seen the trailer where singer Lipa appeared (also provided original music for the title track and score) dancing with Cavill. There was more behind the scenes, which required intense physical training. “For Argylle, the physical training really came through with the stunt choreography,” Cavill told FilmIsNow Movie Bloopers & Extras.
“That’s where most of the training came in. I mean, I was doing a bit of running on the side as well to maintain fitness cuz being fit on set helps you get through very long days, especially, when their fight days as well, uh, but otherwise I was just sticking to following what the stunt team said. Like if they said do this, I, like okay, I’m going to keep on doing that till they get better at it. We did a bit of dancing as well.”
Argylle was intended to be a stylistic spy thriller. The movie featured a lot of dance alongside action choreography. The actor, as a lead, also roped into dancing, saying they have done a fair share of dancing behind the scenes “which didn’t make into the movie a lot.” Explaining dancing in the movie, Cavill candidly revealed that dancing, especially, tap dancing was really hard. “A large amount of it but tap dance is really hard tap dance is really hard,” he said. Argylle will hit the theater on 2 February 2024 before doubting on Apple TV+.
