Celebrated for his portrayal of the iconic Superman in the DC Extended Universe, Henry Cavill has long been the subject of discussions regarding a potential crossover in the MCU. And one of the Marvel characters fans have envisioned him embodying is Wolverine. With Hugh Jackman likely to take a break from the character after Deadpool & Wolverine, several actors have emerged as potential contenders to play the X-Men.
Cavill has been one of the top contenders among all with multiple fan art depicting why the actor could be a perfect choice for the role. However, The Witcher star’s previous statement about potentially joining the MCU suggests that he is less likely to join the MCU as the adamantium-clawed mutant.
Henry Cavill Expressed His Interest in Potentially Joining the MCU
In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Man of Steel star shared his interest in potentially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he revealed which character he would like to play in the extensive superhero franchise.
Henry Cavill shared his desire to bring a new character to life on-screen instead of stepping into the shoes of a role already established by another actor. “I’m never going to say a Marvel character that is already being played by someone else,” he said.
Cavill further stated, “Because everyone’s doing such an amazing job.” His statement suggests that although he is very much interested in joining the MCU, fans may not see him as Wolverine, as the character has been closely associated with one actor for the past two decades, Hugh Jackman.
Jackman has undeniably become synonymous with the X-Men, the movie, and the character that marked his Hollywood debut. He is set to reprise his role in the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds.
Although fans may not see him as Wolverine, the 41-year-old British actor did express interest in another Marvel character, who has been at the center of speculation regarding a potential Disney+ MCU TV series, Captain Britain.
Henry Cavill Would Like to Portray Captain Britain in the MCU
Wolverine is not the only character Henry Cavill has embodied in multiple fan art circulating on the Internet, as it also includes characters such as Sentry, Hyperion, and Captain Britain. During his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor also reflected on these interpretations.
The one that has caught his interest is the UK’s premiere peacekeeper and the Omniversal guardian, Captain Britain. The actor has said that he would like to portray a modernized interpretation of the character, similar to how the studio did with Chris Evans’ Captain America.
“However, I have the internet and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.”
Recent rumors are suggesting that Marvel Studios is potentially working on a Disney + series centered around Captain Britain. No further details regarding the casting, plot, or storyline are available yet.
Introduced in 1976, Captain Britain follows Dr. Brian Braddock, who gains mystical abilities from the sorcerer Merlyn and his daughter Roma and later goes on to join an X-Men team known as Excalibur. The character is also known for his otherworldly powers, including superhuman strength, the ability to fly, heightened reflexes, endurance, and senses.
