Star Wars fans might not recognize the face or name of Matthew Wood, but they are plenty familiar with his voice. Originally a sound engineer and sound editor for Lucasfilm, Wood went on to voice the character of General Grievous, among other voice roles in the franchise. However, the Kaleesh cyborg remains Wood’s most popular role.

During an interview, Wood spoke about the possibility of reprising his role as General Grievous, for a solo movie focusing on the character. Given the expanded focus the character has received in spin-off media, fans have grown attached to Grievous. Therefore, a Star Wars anthology film about the character might make sense and Wood is certainly willing to return.

Matthew Wood Reveals He Is Open to Revisiting General Grievous Role For a Star Wars Movie

Matthew Wood voiced General Grievous in the 2005 film Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, which concluded the prequel trilogy directed by George Lucas. The film marks Grievous’ first live-action appearance after he was introduced in the 2003 Clone Wars film, which has since been declared non-canon.

During an interview with AIPT Comics, Wood was asked about reprising the role of General Grievous for an anthology film that would focus on the character, much like 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Wood was positive about potentially reprising his role if a solo project focused on General Grievous was to be developed. He said:

I’ve always enjoyed that character. He’s a complex soul, he’s a tortured soul.

Aside from Grievous, Wood also voiced the B1 battle droids, who served under the Kaleesh cyborg during the Clone Wars.

Wood expressed an interest in further exploring the story of Grievous, alongside the droids, which he called a fun dynamic to work with. As a result, Wood showed a strong interest in a proposed General Grievous solo film, which could arguably be the first anthology film in the franchise to focus on a prequel-era character.

George Lucas Could Make a General Grievous Star Wars Movie

While there are currently no reported plans for a General Grievous solo film, the possibility is an interesting one to explore. Franchise spearhead George Lucas was involved in the character’s creation and also helped flesh out his story in the Clone Wars animated series, which he also created.

If Lucas shows a personal interest in developing a Grievous film the project could move forward. However, since selling Lucasfilm to Disney, the creator has largely taken a back seat and hasn’t been directly involved in the more recent Star Wars projects. Furthermore, Lucasfilm has veered away from the idea of anthology films after the commercial failure of Solo.

Nonetheless, Grievous is a fascinating character in his own right who deserves a solo project. The character is a disciple of Count Dooku and has an intense backstory in the Legends lore that details his transformation into a cyborg. Therefore, previous media has already laid the groundwork for Grievous’s backstory to be fleshed out in a solo project.
