This is not the first time that fans have expected disappointment from George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter as it has been delayed several times in the past. The much-anticipated novel is part of A Song of Ice and Fire, and it will be the sixth addition to the series, it is believed to be over 1200 pages.

However, the book is taking so long that some fans of the author and his books have given up hope, because the novel is taking longer than some of the fans could remember. To give a clear idea, the fifth novel of the series was published, when HBO’s Game of Thrones was aired. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for the faithful day, when they would hear the cheerful news of the author completing the next novel.
George R.R. Martin’s Gives Update on His The Winds of Winter
George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter has taken ages to release, and fans are utterly annoyed with the author because of how long he is taking to complete it. Martin completed the initial books of the series that led to Game of Thrones in a swift manner.

He published A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords between 1996-2000. But since then, the pace decreased considerably as A Feast for Crows was published in 2005, followed by A Dance with Dragons in 2011, and since then fans have been eagerly waiting for the sixth novel.
The delay is majorly owing to the HBO series because he has been a major part of the show, as he wanted to make the show as close to the source material. Moreover, his time was taken by other projects and books that follow his level of storytelling.

However, after ages, Martin has finally some good news for his readers as he updates them on his Not a Blog, stating that he will write more Dunk & Egg stories after he finally finishes the novel by updating fans of a new show. He wrote,
THE HEDGE KNIGHT will be a lot shorter than GAME OF THRONES or HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, with a much different tone… but it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe Ira Parker and his team are doing a great job. I hope to visit the shoot come July, when I swing by Belfast on my way to the worldcon in Glasgow.
He added, that the show is expected to make its debut next year and he believes he will be done with the novel by 2025.
The show will make its debut next year… and if it does well, THE SWORN SWORD and THE MYSTERY KNIGHT will follow. By which time I hope to have finished some more Dunk & Egg stories (yes, after I finish THE WINDS OF WINTER).
Nevertheless, fans are not thrilled as it has been over a decade, since they last got to read the novel of the series. But fans are not excited as they shared their opinion of the update.
Fans of George R.R. Martin Are Not Thrilled About The Update on The Novel
Even though Martin has updated his fans on his blog, the readers are not thrilled that the sixth novel of the series will soon be published. The author gave a similar update back in November 2023 via BANGCAST, where he stated that he had written “like 1,100 pages written but I still have hundreds more pages to go.”

The surprising thing is that the number has been the same since he gave an update on his book in 2022. Culture Crave (@CultureCrave) shared the news on X, where the readers expressed their disappointment with the delay and believed that the novel was a myth and would never be released.
It’s been 4,698 days since A Dance With Dragons. He’s not gonna finish 😂

With the novel taking so long to complete, fans have given up hope on the novel, and they would probably be surprised if George R.R. Martin finally updated how he has completed the novel and it will soon be available to read.
The Winds of Winter has no release date. In the meantime, you can stream GOT on Max.
