If there’s one thing that the MCU star is hailed for in the film industry, it’s his impeccable versatility as an actor. In his lengthy Hollywood career, which spans more than four decades, RDJ has portrayed a deluge of characters on-screen, ranging from a shrewd detective and a zealous scientist to a superhero with an armor that lets him fly and a physician with the ability to communicate with animals. And yet, there have been various occasions wherein the Zodiac star was reproached for clashing his own identity with that of his characters.

But it looks like that’s about to change with The Sympathizer.

Robert Downey Jr. to Play Multiple Characters in The Sympathizer

Based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, The Sympathizer is an upcoming HBO miniseries with Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar serving as co-showrunners; the former is also attached to the project as a director. The limited series revolves around a half-French and half-Vietnamese communist spy who faces exile during the culmination of the Vietnam War.

The Sympathizer stars the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande along with Fred Nguyen Khan, Alan Trong, Toan Le, Sandra Oh, and Vy Le. Downey Jr., 58, who is also executive producing the show, will be representing multiple characters in the drama series, all of which happen to symbolize different aspects of the American institution.

Given the nature of his prior films and shows, this might just be a refreshing change for both him and the audience. Sure, he’s already depicted characters of varying personalities and backgrounds throughout his career, but fans have often noticed an uncanny resemblance between him and some of the roles he’s represented so far, especially those of Marvel’s Tony Stark, aka, Iron Man, and Sherlock Holmes. So, by taking over several strikingly different characters in The Sympathizer might just be Downey Jr. turning a new leaf. Or at least that’s what the majority of fans seem to believe.

And after displaying different characters with similar tones and attitudes like the billionaire businessman turned superhero whose complacent humor reminds one an awful lot of RDJ himself, fans are ready to welcome this change of scenery in The Sympathizer with arms wide open.
