Idris Elba Wants His Film Among The Best In Spy Genre

During a conversation with Timeout, Idris Elba faced a question regarding a scene in the film, Luther: The Fallen Sun. In this particular moment, a barman offers Luther a Martini, and he opts for water instead. Given the frequent inquiries about his potential involvement as James Bond, this choice could be seen as symbolic. Elba was asked about his reaction upon reading this in the script.

Idris Elba expressed that initially, he had reservations, thinking it might be a bit of a joke. However, when they actually performed it, it turned out to be incredibly amusing and felt completely authentic. He was inclined to include it in the final product. While the speculations about him potentially playing James Bond were enjoyable, he had always harbored the notion of shaping Luther into his own distinct domain.

Idris Elba told Timeout:

“The Bond rumours have been fun but I’ve always been secretly gearing Luther to be my version of that space. He’s not a spy but if you’re going to sit and watch Bourne and Mission: Impossible and James Bond, then I want Luther to sit in that space – but with its unique vibe.”

Elba emphasized that it wasn’t about creating his version of James Bond or anything like that. Instead, it was about occupying a similar territory – a solitary character with unwavering determination. Luther may not be a spy, but if you’re a fan of Matt Damon’s Bourne, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, and James Bond, he wanted Luther to occupy a similar realm, albeit with its own unique atmosphere.

Neil Cross Doesn’t Think Anyone Match Luther

Neil Cross, when it comes to his creations, places John Luther on a pedestal far above James Bond. After all, Luther is his brainchild, and that alone grants him the privilege of elevating his own creation above all others. Hence, in the Luther film, The Fallen Sun, there’s a notable scene where Elba’s character refuses a martini – the iconic drink synonymous with 007’s legacy.

Idris Elba undeniably finds greater satisfaction in portraying the restrained and less commercially saturated character of John Luther than he would have in a heavily exploited franchise. Furthermore, it’s widely known that the Luther series is moving towards a broader horizon, with other actors set to step into the role.

Luther can be streamed on Netflix.
