One Piece Live Action is a massive hit for Netflix. Coming out of the shell of flops, One Piece Live Action broke the curse of anime live adaptation. In its first four days of streaming, the show crossed more than 18.5 million views and almost 140 million watch hours. Newspapers, magazines, non-anime fans, etc., have all praised the series.
Many believe that one of the main reasons for the show to perform so well is the presence of Eiichiro Oda. The One Piece creator had the huge task of deciding on his cast and scrutinizing every scene to make the series perfect. But recently, One Piece editor Tessa Verfuss revealed an interesting fact about Oda, which might interest One Piece fans.
Tess Verfuss On Eiichiro Oda’s First TV Work
A few weeks back, Tessa Verfuss, One Piece Live Action editor, gave an exclusive interview to Screen Rant Plus. Over there, she mentioned her experience of working with Eiichiro Oda. Other than that, there was a particular thing she said about the One Piece creator. She said Oda is not a TV person, and this live-action is his first.
When asked how intimidating it was to work with Eiichiro Oda, Tessa Verfuss said,
“Yeah, you’re certainly holding your breath a little bit for specifically that steps. It’s you I’ve worked with Netflix before so you know getting up to their level was you know like for the course. It’s just part of the process. You’re kind of used to the rhythm of that and having the studio give their notes.”
She continued,
“But yeah, having kind of like there’s much kind of bigger presence and bigger personality, and knowing that you know he’s not a TV guy, you know we are TV people who make TV. He’s not like he’s obviously been involved with the anime but like this is his baby in a very different way.”
One Piece Live Action is Oda’s first work as a TV guy, but it was his charismatic presence that helped Netflix deliver a blockbuster of a show.
Why Did Tess Vefuss Feel Intimated By The One Piece Creator?
Tessa Verfuss has worked in the TV line for several years. Her resume says she has also worked with Netflix previously. But One Piece Live Action was different. Even if the whole team performed well, it was in Eiichiro Oda’s hands to determine the perfection of the task. One Piece is his baby, so he would always be protective of it. Tessa Verfuss said that often Oda would throw them out of the window with his comments.
He would ask for a different straw hat for the sake of the scene. So, the team would have a look at it from a slightly different angle. If he asks for another shot, the team will deliver that. Eiichiro Oda’s work ethic is unmatched. So, it was intimidating for others to work with him. But at the end of the day, the show did well. And everyone was happy. But the cast and crew need to prepare for another season and be intimated with Oda sensei.
