Harvey Weinstein became famous for being a Hollywood film producer who won an Oscar for the 1999 film Shakespeare In Love. Weinstein became infamous for being part of a r*pe scandal and went through several years of trials before being found guilty.
In 2018, more than 80 women stepped forward and accused the producer of forcing them to do certain acts. Having found guilty in a court in New York back in 2020, Weinstein went to jail. The recent news is that the New York Court of Appeals has overturned Weinstein’s conviction!
When Harvey Weinstein Was Found Guilty
Weinstein has been alleged to forcing himself on women as far back as the 1970s. With the allegations against him, the producer was expelled from the Academy after which, more than 80 women alleged Weinstein with being physical with them.
This resulted in women from across the globe standing against powerful men and allegations of r*pe and s*xual assault came to light. The incident became known as the #MeToo Movement. It was in 2020 when Weinstein was found guilty in a r*pe case by the court in New York and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.
Starting his jail time at the Wende Correctional Facility in New York, Weinstein’s NY term was short-lived. In 2021, the producer was extradited to Los Angeles to face further charges where he was found guilty of three out of the seven charges against him. With 23 years of prison levied by the New York court and an additional 16 years in a Los Angeles jail, Harvey Weinstein had a combined sentence of 39 years in prison. However, that all changed three years later.
Harvey Weinstein’s New York Case Got Overturned!
Fresh out of the reports, the case has come to light that Harvey Weinstein’s New York case has been overturned by the New York Court of Appeals. In a 4-3 ruling, the court ruled that the judge who gave the sentence had shown prejudice against Weinstein by allowing women to testify allegations that were not relevant to the case at all.
So it seems that Weinstein may get to have a re-trial in New York. While sharing the news on X (formerly Twitter), people talked about how it really doesn’t matter since Weinstein has to serve a 16-year term at the prison in Los Angeles anyway!
