Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games are infamous for their lack of storytelling. This isn’t to say the games don’t have depth; far from it. Rather, the impetus is on the player to explore the world and understand the many mysteries it houses.

FromSoftware fans are used to this now, with people spending hundreds of hours in the games to find out even the smallest details. But some mysteries may never be solved because the answers are not in the game!

The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC gave us a lot of exposition into Marika’s origins, the actions against the Hornsent, and some information on Miquella. But there are still some questions from the base game that remain to be answered. Additionally, Hidetaka Miyazaki stated one particular mystery would be solved in the Elden Ring DLC, but that doesn’t seem to be the case yet.

The more people explore the lands of the expansion, the more mysteries and questions arise about many events in the base game. Earlier, someone from the community had asked about Elden Ring’s Walking Mausoleum and the demigods they housed. Another Reddit user has asked about the Tarnished’s hub location from the base game, the Roundtable Hold.

I remember in a interview Miyazaki said reason why the roundtable burns after burning the Erdtree will be explained in the DLC and why it’s significant in an interview… Was it ever explained?

After setting the Erdtree ablaze, returning to the hold shows that it, too, is smoldering, with many NPCs having fled. Reddit user MienaiYurei says Hidetaka Miyazaki had mentioned in an interview that the DLC would hold the explanation for this event, but no such revelation was provided.

However, the game director has given some understanding of the link between this location and the Erdtree. In the second volume of The Books of Knowledge, Miyazaki says that the power of the Roundtable Hold comes from the Erdtree. So, setting fire to the tree affects the state of the Hold.

However, he does mention that the team decided not to go into the reasoning behind the Hold’s existence in the game, so we don’t have a complete answer yet.

The size and scale of such a game, especially with the expansion, are things that can’t be taken lightly. It’s the largest endeavor from FromSoftware, and Miyazaki has said that the studio’s future projects will be very different from its latest release. This is not only due to the scope of the challenge but also to the reduced margin for failure.

While the studio has grown in size and resources thanks to the success of its projects, the bar has also been raised to a much higher standard. As with his games, it appears Miyazaki also knows to pick and choose his battles, and going in a different direction may be the ideal path forward.

Elden Ring’s DLC continues to offer players more to find and explore, with many understanding some lore implications only after tens of hours in the new realm. We can expect such discoveries to continue for a while, but we’re also excited to see what FromSoftware has in store for us next.
