There are no boundaries to the level of detail Hidetaka Miyazaki loves to include in his creations, and the recent Shadow of the Erdtree expansion for Elden Ring is no exception to this rule.
One of the weirdest phenomena during the playthrough in the Realm of Shadow is not being able to ride your torrent in the Abyssal Woods, which was confusing at first, but as players dug deeper, they found the answer in plain sight.
Torrent in the Abyssal Woods – How Hidetaka Miyazaki Thought of Everything in Elden Ring
Given by Melina as soon as the player reaches their third site of grace, Torrent is a spirit steed that stays by the Tarnished’s side on his journey to become the Elden Lord. However, in a surprising turn of events, the steed refuses to come out in the Abyssal Woods, owing to the frenzied mania that goes on in the area.
Diving deeper, players have found the exact reason why the steed is so afraid to come out. As stated in the Surging Frenzy Flame’s item description, frenzy does not only have a maddening effect on creatures but can also get rid of spirits permanently, having a melting effect on them.

Reacting to the information, other users showed their astonishment at the item description, stating how ‘it all makes sense’ now, and once again proving why Hidetaka Miyazaki is a brilliant architect of level design and hiding details in it.
I was worried that they damaged Torrent's bravery by being a little bit scared of some spooky woods, but this makes it all make sense.

Teased for the first time in February 2023, fans have waited for nearly a year and a half to finally step into the Realm of Shadow. And despite having a few flaws, as pointed out by the players, Shadow of the Erdtree stays a DLC in a league of its own.
To celebrate the launch of the expansion, the studio was congratulated by other franchises as well, including The Witcher series by CD Projekt Red, which posted custom art made by one of the developers in the team showcasing Geralt defeating Mohg, the Lord of Blood, and making his way towards Miquella’s cocoon.
What remains unfortunate is that the DLC is the first and only addition of content Elden Ring is going to get, according to the game’s director, which has got every player now rooting for a sequel to FromSoftware’s best-selling franchise instead.
