As players begin their journey in the game by starting a new game, they are given the chance to choose a starting gift that can be of help in the game. The players need to choose their gift from a long list of useful things. However, among all of these items, the most iconic one was a pendant with the description, “Trinket. No effect, but fond memories comfort travelers,”  which therefore had an element of mystery around it.

Hidetaka Miyazaki talks about the Dark Souls pendant

Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki said in a Famitsu interview from 2011 that he’d pick the pendant or nothing as the starting gift in the Dark Souls game. Therefore, according to this suggestion made by Miyazaki, the pendant might have a very significant purpose in the game.

Players, by reading the description, believed the pendant had no use in the game, but it quickly became the center of many theories and an area of interest for the fans of the game. For months, fans tried to find a hidden purpose for this item, ranging from in-game events to even unlocking hidden storylines.

However, all of the efforts by the community to find the purpose of the pendant turned out to be futile. Finally, after many years of speculation and debate, the game director during an interview with IGN said,

When it comes to the pendant, I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank.

This was nothing more than just a prank that the developers pulled on the players, and the pendant had no significant purpose at all.
