Jonathan Majors Iconic Anime-Inspired Photoshoot

While talking about how anime inspires his work, stylist Julian explained how the Jonathan Majors photoshoot was inspired by one of the flyest characters of One Piece, Donquixote Doflamingo. According to him, Doflamingo’s style is very common among men’s fashion. He said:

“I think my appreciation for Doflamingo’s style and One Piece’s general attention to fashion subconsciously inspired the Jonathan Majors look. There are so many elements in Doffy’s style that we see in men’s fashion today on runways: oversized statement coats in vibrant colors, feathers, pointed-toe shoes/boots, on-the-shoulder outerwear, and more.”

He further added,

“It’s so funny because so many people believe that I designed or created the clothes for that shoot specifically for the Doffy moment when in actuality, this was a real look from the Milan Fashion Week Men’s Runway that the designer created without even realizing this anime character had been there and done that.”

Alexander Julian’s Ever Growing Love for Anime

In an interview with Crunchyroll, Stylist Julian explained his inspiration for his work. According to him, he has always drawn inspiration for his work from what’s right in front of him. Growing up, it was his culture and his environment and when he shifted to New York, the street became his inspiration. When he started to watch more and more anime as an adult, he found the vibrantly stylized imagery in the anime world and its love making its way into his work. It separated the work that he was creating from the rest of the world and therefore he got more involved in it.
He said:

“The same efforts we see put into cosplay are the same efforts that many fashion stylists like me put into creating looks for magazine editorials, fashion shows, and red carpets. It’s my goal to help people connect the dots and see the artistry that goes into cosplaying.”
