Hogwarts Legacy continues to grow and continues to attract Wizarding World enthusiasts to revisit the Harry Potter universe and make this the most popular game of the year, at least for now.
The iconic Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry captivates with its immersion in the Portkey Games title and allows players to access magical adventures on all platforms where the game is available. This winning number is revealed with Google Search Volume.
For Now, The Award For Most Popular Game Of The Year Goes To Hogwarts Legacy
Statistics from Futbin, an online resource for FIFA Ultimate Team players, show Hogwarts Legacy as the most popular game in 2023, based on Google Search Volume over the last twelve months including locations such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Brazil, and more, totaling ninety countries. The game, since its launch in February, sold more than twelve million units in the first two weeks, having been released for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
Using Google Keyword Planner, the Futbin team crunched the numbers and discovered that behind Hogwarts Legacy as the second most searched game of the year is Resident Evil 4 Remake, released in March for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X and S. Being followed by EA Sports FC 24, Atomic Heart, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Diablo 4 and more.
Furthermore, it was analyzed that the average number of monthly searches was highest in the United States, while Germany and the United Kingdom had the second and third highest numbers, respectively.
If you’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what Hogwarts Legacy is, this is an action-adventure game where you control a new student at the famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Set in the famous Harry Potter universe, but about a hundred years before the events of the film series, at the end of the 19th century. Playing the game, you learn spells from your teachers and other students, as you embark on a journey to discover an ancient secret hidden deep within the Wizarding World.
The journey of Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t stop because its release for Nintendo Switch is scheduled for November 14th, with pre-orders available for US$54.99 on Amazon. But the number achieved does not just represent a sales success but the public’s interest in finding out more about the game, its universe, and its history, after Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most significant expansions of the mythology since the main films and fans are after all the new details.
Not only the great setting provided by Portkey Games in the game that causes this sudden interest, but also the massive importance of this franchise in pop culture (which is one of the main factors, but not the only one), but the list of reasons includes controversies that surrounded the launch of the title and its popularity. This is due to some controversial and undoubtedly wrong positions taken by the creator of the saga, writer J.K. Rowling.
This led to movements to boycott Hogwarts Legacy as it is still directly involved with the creation and receives parts of the profit from sales. Everything got worse when details of the game’s story were revealed and highlighted the same problematic themes, such as using goblins as villains while being portrayed as racist or misogynistic caricatures. Elements from books and films were remembered and political opinions entered the discussion, which undoubtedly shook the scene and increased the number of searches.
