1. Spider-Crawl (The Exorcist, 1973)

The Exorcist

The story of a young girl named Regan, who is possessed by the demon Pazuzu and is attempted to be exorcised by two hopeful priests. In this scene, her physical appearance is grotesque and unnatural. Regan, while possessed, moves backward on her hands and feet, with her back arched and her head turned completely around to face the people at the top of the stairs. Her movements are jerky and disjointed, which adds to the horror of the scene. The scene is scary because it presents a distorted and unnatural version of human movement and appearance. Regan’s spider-like crawl and her contorted face defy the laws of physics and human anatomy, creating a sense of unease and horror.
