House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the events in Game of Thrones. It follows the Targaryen civil war and Rhaenyra’s fight for the Iron Throne against Alicent Hightower, her stepmother, and Aegon II Targaryen, her half-brother.

House Of The Dragon: Not A Fairytale Story

Despite the unexpected ending in Game of Thrones, it still presented a feat for the Stark family as they survived and ruled their respective kingdoms. In this prequel, a happy ending is not applicable for any of the characters.

Aegon the Younger ascended to the Iron Throne and became known as King Aegon the Broken because of the innumerable tragedies he has suffered ever since his early days. Aegon III, who is expected to make an impression by the end of House of the Dragon, will meet the same fate when he discovers the grim end of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

In the teaser image released by HBO, Rhaenyra is seen standing on the steps of the Iron Throne with Syrax looming behind her. This dragon somehow also resembles Aegon II’s creature, Sunfyre. With the giant beast’s angry look and fire burning in its mouth, it teases Rhaenyra’s tragic end.

Game of Thrones has popularized killing off major characters, and House of the Dragon is not different from it. With Rhaenyra’s demise at the end, it will also mean her allies, as well as foes, will horribly meet their ends.
