Sofia Vergara may not possess the strongest American English accent, but she most certainly knows how to slam somebody down with the wittiest comeback when they take it too far. And for one renowned for her starstruck performance as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the blockbuster sitcom Modern Family, she proved this trait of hers as well.
Recently, on a Spanish-language talk show appearance, Vergara felt that the TV host tried to mock the English accent she sported in Modern Family. Thus, almost as though a defensive instinct was triggered inside of her, she responded with the most sarcastic of remarks to rip the TV show host to shreds, and boy, did she do that most epically!
Sofia Vergara Clapped Back At A TV Host For Mocking Her Accent
Everybody loved Modern Family throughout the time it aired, and even when it stopped airing, fans’ love for it never dissipated. But one of the things they loved the most in the entire series was Sofia Vergara‘s real-to-the-core character, Gloria Delgado-Pritchett.
Just as the actress does not sport one of the best and strongest American English accents in real life, her onscreen character didn’t either and went on to mispronounce multiple words throughout her time. But that was also exactly what fans loved the most about her.
However, recently, a TV show host seemingly tried to mock her for that very accent she sported in Modern Family instead. This happened while Vergara appeared on the Spanish-language talk show El Hormiguero, with the host Pablo Motos asking her to pronounce ‘Modern Family‘.
At this, though she initially got confused by the question which came out of the blue while she was talking about her role in the superhit sitcom, it didn’t take her too long to respond with the most epic comeback. She said (via Entertainment Tonight):
“How do I say [Modern Family] in English? (Host: It’s because, in English, it’s like-) It sounds wrong? (Host: No, No.) Oh, because you speak better English than me? Ah.”
But even that wasn’t all: Vergara continued to roast the host for poking fun at her English by listing off the accolades and accomplishments she earned from the very same show for which host Pablo Motos was mocking her for her accept. She remark:
“How many Emmy nominations do you have in the United States, sorry? How many times were you nominated for the Golden Globes, sorry?”
Though it all eventually got sorted out, Sofia Vergara’s clapping back at the host was a necessary reminder to all the people who marked out the actress for her accent: Gloria can be as fierce in real life as she is onscreen if you push her too far!
Modern Family Still Ranks As One Of Sofia Vergara’s Best Performances
Modern Family may have ended in 2020, with Sofia Vergara going on to perform equally tremendously in other big-screen performances as well, but the show still ranks as one of the best performances by the actress to date.
Not only did she get nominated for four stunning Primetime Emmy Awards along with getting four sparkling Golden Globes nods for her remarkable performance as Gloria in Modern Family, but she also became the highest-paid female TV actor with the superhit sitcom.
Adding to this are the multiple nominations and wins she received from the Kids’ Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and even Critics Choice Television Awards, among others.
All in all, Sofia Vergara is one of the most successful actresses even without a strong English accent, and people need to think twice (maybe even a hundred times now) before mocking her for her flawed English!
