He felt the rancher was excessively far from his foundations, becoming snared in political games as opposed to keeping an eye on the land. The neo-Western drama Yellowstone’s creator, Sheridan, had to navigate a delicate balance between calming Costner’s concerns and maintaining his vision for the story.
Yellowstone Season 3 saw an intentional shift. Despite new threats, John Dutton relied on his ranching skills and leadership to return to the ranch. The lead struggled with conflicts, his children’s futures, and family dynamics. The character’s growth slowed down, allowing Costner to depict a more regular and subtle shift. “What he’s clung to is [Dutton’s] commitments to his family and way of life. Dutton’s big failing is not evolving with the times — not finding different revenue streams [for the ranch]. Kevin felt season two was deviating from that, and I don’t know that he was wrong. In season three, we steered back into it. And I recall him winning a Golden Globe last year for his performance, so I think it’s working.”
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan described how he had the option to “steer back” Yellowstone after Costner had a few second thoughts about season 3. As a result, Season 3 conveyed a grounded story wealthy in family drama and Western grit, keeping both the star and the show’s ideal fulfilled. While the details stay hidden, Season 3 stands as proof that cooperation can even pass through the choppiest waters.
