Having hosted the Golden Globe Awards five times, Ricky Gervais has garnered a reputation for his savage gigs with Hollywood’s most influential stars. Although not everyone is a fan of his sense of humor, many love The Office star and even wish to see him as the host in the future.

Ricky Gervais Roasted Jennifer Lawrence at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards

Ricky Gervais has some of the most memorable monologues at the Golden Globe Awards. The After Life star opens up by roasting and poking fun at almost anyone who catches his eye. And something similar happened to Jennifer Lawrence in 2016. As the X-Men star caught Gervais eye, he knew exactly what he had to say.

As he addressed Lawrence’s efforts for raising the issue of the gender pay gap in 2015. “Jennifer Lawrence made the news when she demanded equal pay for women in Hollywood, and she received overwhelming support from people everywhere,” Gervais said.

The hall was filled with applause and cheer for the Mother star. However, it soon turned into laughter, as Ricky Gervais said, “There were marches on the street, nurses, and factory workers saying, ‘How the hell could a 25-year-old live on $52 million.'”

He then went on to share that he is totally against the gender pay gap and is paid the same “as Tina and Amy did last year.” However, Gervais was not ready to stop yet as he said, “I know there were two of them, but it’s not my fault if they want to share the money, is it? That’s their stupid fault!”

Although not everyone liked the joke and it once again led the Derek star to face criticism, people were happy to see that Gervais’ sarcasm isn’t gender-biased. The Hunger Games star, who looked nervous when Ricky Gervais mentioned her first, also didn’t seem to mind the joke.

Jennifer Lawrence raised the issue of gender pay inequality after starring in the 2013 film American Hustle, saying that she received considerably less than her male co-star in the film.

Golden Globe Viewers Want Ricky Gervais Back

Followed by the controversy-surrounded hiatus in 2022, Golden Globe Awards returned to the TV screens earlier this month. The 35-year-old comedian Jerrod Carmichael took over as the host of the award ceremony.

However, viewers were not so impressed with his performance as they started demanding the return of Ricky Gervais as the host. They started calling Carmichael’s hosting “boring” and “unwatchable.”

The ratings of the 2023 Golden Globe Awards were also down from the last ceremony’s telecast. The show initially drew a 1.1 rating and 6.3 million viewers, taking it down 26% and 9%, respectively. The Night at the Museum star hosted the Golden Globe for five-time from 2010 to 2020. He hosted the show for the last time in 2020 and declared that it would be the last time he was hosting the ceremony.
