Hugh Grant is one of the most dreamy and alluring actors of all time. Despite having starred in numerous notable films across genres, he is known best for his work in the romantic comedy genre. While the endearing star has delivered multiple charming rom-coms, one of his best-ever works is the film Love Actually.
An amalgamation of different love stories, Grant stars as the British Prime Minister who falls for a staff member. Even though the film went on to become the best Christmas film of all time, the actor recently revealed that he almost turned it down because the plot appeared to be similar to two of his other iconic films, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Hugh Grant Almost Turned Down His Most Celebrated Rom-Com
Hugh Grant starred in the Christmas classic Love Actually. An ensemble film having multiple love stories leading to Christmas in London, it explored the themes of new romance, infidelity, unrequited love, and so on. Despite having an exceptional cast including Colin Firth, Grant’s portrayal stood out because he played the British Prime Minister who falls for a staff member.
While talking to Access Hollywood recently, the actor was informed that it had been 20 years since the film came out, and he shared an interesting anecdote about his casting.
“There was no auditioning… I was off with the Prime Minister and I said to Richard Curtis, ‘I don’t know Richard, it sounds like I could be doing the same part yet again after Four Weddings and Notting Hill’. He said ‘No, no. It’s significantly different.’ ‘Okay, well I’ll play it significantly differently and then played it exactly the same.'”
While Grant has starred in multiple rom-coms, Love Actually remains a crowd favorite. Despite this, the actor also revealed he doesn’t really like the film.
Hugh Grant Doesn’t Really Like His Best Film Of All Time
While it is true Hugh Grant’s Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Notting Hill might appear to be similar, the first one stands out for its unique storyline and characters. Despite that, Hugh Grant isn’t fond of his best film of all time. Rather he skips through it except for Colin Firth’s part.
Just a day older than him, Grant’s ‘rivalry’ with his contemporary Firth is well known. The two seem to outrageously hate each other, often making jokes and calling each other out. So it seemed shocking that Grant would prefer his rival’s part to his. Nonetheless, talking about the film to Access Hollywood, he stated,
“I like Colin’s bits, Colin Firth’s story. I skipped through the rest of it really, which is weird because I hate Colin and I want nothing but bad for his career. But I do think that’s the best part of the film.”
Well, whether he likes the film or not, the fans certainly love the film.
Love Actually can be streamed on Netflix.
