The Marvel star, Mark Ruffalo is famous for one another thing, and that is, for being an active environmentalist. He has squared up with many corporations and even local governments in places since his first fight against energy companies threatening to frack close to his farm in New York. In the following decade, he actively supported frontline fighters for policy changes as well as community development.

He also actively participated in creating awareness for climate change and trying to encourage utilizing clean energy solutions as much as possible. After front-lining many protests himself, he, in a Twitter post yesterday, called out Shell’s Beaver county plant for their irresponsible management of safety regulations that led to the same plant starting to melt, as shown in a recently surfaced video.

Mark Ruffalo In Hulk Mode Calls Out Plastic Manufacturer Shell

Living up to his nickname “Real-life Eco-Hulk”, Mark Ruffalo made a Twitter post yesterday sharing a petition made by the Non-profit Organization Only One, to hold Shell responsible for their poor safety measures, causing irreparable damage to the environment. He quoted Only One’s initial tweet, in which, they shared the video of Shell’s Beaver county plant starting to melt due to immense heat and mentioned how the production of plastic is detrimental to the environment.

According to him, “This fire at a new Shell plant in Beaver County, PA caused mass pollution, endangering their workers & many families in the community.” Moreover, he urged people to sign the petition to hold the billion-dollar plastic manufacturer responsible for the damage caused by them.

Mark Ruffalo’s eventful environmentalist career

As mentioned before, this is not Ruffalo’s first rodeo against a potential environmental foe. He was seen as a frontline protestor in the North Dakota Pipeline incident against the local government threatening to drill on their lands. He also gave testimony in Capitol Hill against manufacturers who were responsible for hundreds of military families getting sick because of their terrible safety protocols which caused harmful, cancer-linked chemical discharge to leach into the water supply of military sites.

This is the very event that inspired his movie, Dark Waters. He also co-founded The Solutions Projects, an environmental activism organization that has donated more than $5 million in grants to various projects all over the country. As such, his response to such a hazardous event comes as no surprise to people.

Interestingly, after the video was made public, Shell announced through Facebook that it was an “elevated flare for a period of time,” and that they will be initiating controlled shutdowns in some portions of the plant, “In order to perform maintenance and conduct repairs on one of our unit systems”.

It should be mentioned that this is not the first time the multi-billion dollar company is under heat. A while ago, concerns about microplastics potentially making their way to the river from their plant were raised. This again highlights the hazards of plastic production as mentioned by Ruffalo in his post. It would be important to see if proper protocols are maintained this time around after such concerns are raised once again publicly.
