Avengers: Secret Wars‘ release being four whole years far away certainly hasn’t deterred Marvel fans from coming up with all kinds of speculation about what’s going to happen in the film and what all superheroes are going to be revived. And following his work on Black Panther and its sequel, fans have been voicing their opinions about Ryan Coogler taking over the reins for the direction of Secret Wars as well.

The 2026 Avengers movie is reportedly going to be the final addition to Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so ideally, someone who already has experience being at the helm of things, like Ryan Coogler, would be a suitable choice. But with Black Panther 2 just a couple of weeks away from its official release, the director seems to be fully focused on his upcoming film and nothing else.

Ryan Coogler addresses the Secret Wars speculation

While talking to ComicBook.com‘s Aaron Perine, Ryan Coogler shed some light on the ongoing rumors which claim that he is very much in line to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, which is set to release on May 1, 2026.

And upon being asked whether he had any plans to direct Avengers: Secret Wars, the Creed II director seemed surprised at the very implication of it. Take a look at the full interaction about the same.

Perine: “Ok. Some of the fans want you direct Secret Wars. You open to that if they want you?”

Coogler: Say what now?

Perine: They want you to direct Secret Wars. The fans, the streets, that’s what they want!”

Coogler: Man, what streets, bro? What’re you talking about, bro?!

Perine: “I said everyone, so yeah!”

Coogler: “Bro, I ain’t heard nothing about that man, I’m trying to finish this one!

Even when Aaron asked the filmmaker about working on a Black Panther 3, Coogler had no answers about Wakanda’s future as he remarked being focused on finishing the things at hand. “I try to finish what I’m doing, and then think about what’s next,” he said.

Will Ryan Coogler take over the direction of Secret Wars?

From his two cents on the whole subject, it looked like Coogler wasn’t even really looking to get on board as a director for the 2026 Avengers film. However, that might be the case for the present, given he already has tons of things to oversee.

A still from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever not too far away from release and early reviews about the film already flying in, Coogler is a busy man. Not only that but he is also set to lead the Ironheart series which will air on Disney+ during 2023 fall as an executive director. So, Coogler clearly already has a lot on his radar before he could nudge in the direction of committing to something new.

But with Secret Wars still four years in the future, one could never say, because there’s still plenty of time for the Wakanda Forever director to consider, weigh in all the factors, and make his decision. Who knows, maybe he’ll end up listening to the fans after all.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is ready to hit cinemas on November 11, 2022.
