Idris Elba Fakes His American Accent For Fans of The Wire

Back in 2002, the actor appeared in the role of Russell “Stringer” Bell in the television series The Wire. Portraying the role of a second-in-command to Avon Barksdale in the series, Elba takes over the charge while his boss ends up in prison and essentially becomes a drug lord himself in the series.

Stating that there’s a very specific reason why he fakes his American accent while talking to these fans, Elba revealed that some of the people are real-life hardcore drug dealers who confide and share their real-life incidents and experiences with the actor! “Wherever I go, the real hardcore drug dealers come up to me and confide in me. I almost feel guilty turning around and saying: “Ello, mate. My name’s Idris and I’m from London.” I don’t want to break the illusion.”

The character ultimately meets his death in Season 3 of the show and Idris Elba leaves a long-lasting impression on fans.

As per the trivia on IMDB, David Simon, the head writer of The Wire, revealed Idris Elba took the death of his character very seriously. As per the writer, Elba was devastated when his on-screen character Russell “Stringer” Bell died in Season 3.

David Simon stated that he had to console Elba that he was going to get other roles after the death! Simon had to reassure Elba that he was talented enough that he would get other roles after The Wire. The actor went on to get nominated for 5 Primetime Emmys alongside several awards and iconic films to his name. The Wire received a rating of 9.3/10 on IMDB and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
