The Wolverine variants presented a montage of hilarious characters, ranging from a height-accurate Wolverine to a crucified Wolverine, to an undercover Patch Wolverine. Finally, we also got to see a Henry Cavill version of Wolverine, who took fans back to the character’s roots and was seemingly torn out of the Comics’ pages, straight-up.

As entertaining as the cameo was, Cavill’s poaching by Marvel is bound to irk devoted DC fans, considering for years he was recognized as Superman. Now, the man behind DC projects such as Man of Steel, Batman vs. Superman and Justice League, Zack Snyder has had his say on the Wolverine cameo from Cavill as well.

In the movie, when Reynolds’ Deadpool realizes that the death of the anchor being from his universe, Wolverine, is set to lead to the destruction of his reality, he embarks on a multiversal adventure to initially replace the anchor being with another version of Wolverine. And while that plan falters in the sense that another variant of Wolverine cannot replace the anchor being Wolverine from his universe, fans get to see a plethora of Wolverine variants who all have some significance to them.

Patch Wolverine is the identity Logan takes up when he is undercover, the crucified Wolverine was part of Uncanny X-Men #251, and the one-handed Wolverine was straight out of the Age of Apocalypse storyline. Regardless, we also saw another menacing, comic-accurate Wolverine in the form of a cigar-smoking Henry Cavill, who immediately stuns Deadpool.

And while most of the Wolverines in question end up ravaging Deadpool and brutally murder him, he eventually stumbles to the ‘worst Wolverine variant,’ one whose absence has led to the destruction of the X-Men in his reality. That Wolverine eventually teams up with Deadpool after murdering him a few times, before the dup wound up in The Void, where they find a range of other obstacles to traverse past.

DC fans might be irked, but Zack Snyder has no qualms about the potential poaching of his Superman. In a recent interview with ComicBookMovie, Snyder was asked about his opinion on the hilarious cameo, and responded with only positive things. The director claimed that while he himself had not watched the cameo, the idea of Cavill masquerading around as the epic Hugh Jackman IP ‘sounded fun’ to Snyder:

I haven’t seen it yet, but I did hear about it. Sounds fun. Well, Henry is an amazing Superman to me, obviously. I hired him. I wanted him to be Superman. So any coins left on the table are unfortunate, and in that way, it would be great to have more Henry. I always think you could have more Henry.

One look at the way in which Cavill brought forth Wolverine to life, fans will indeed be willing to believe that notion. The MCU can also do with a bit more Cavill in the future, although Wolverine might not be the ideal character for him to portray.

After all, that ship sailed decades ago, when Hugh Jackman made the character his very own.
