The film is basically a huge risk especially after the actress accepted a script from an unknown scribe. Despite coming from a legacy family, Rose Gilroy – the niece of director Tony Gilroy – still doesn’t have her membership card from the Writers Guild of America.

How Rose Gilroy Landed The Scriptwriting Job On Scarlett Johansson’s Movie

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, up-and-coming screenwriter Rose Gilroy could not contain her excitement after her script had been bought and worked into a big-screen film.

This was the first paid job I ever had. I was not in the guild [WGA] when I got this job, but I’d been writing for three-and-a-half years.

As the daughter of Dan Gilroy and Rene Russo, she attempted to carve her own path away from the movie business by taking up medicine and law-related courses. Still, the blood of a creative runs through her veins, and she ended up pursuing writing as a career.

Gilroy didn’t expect Scarlett Johansson’s company would take a chance on her script. She recalled the time she proved herself worthy of the trust: “I was really green and not in the guild, so they were like, ‘We like your stuff, but this is such a gamble.’ So I wrote the first 15 pages on spec with their pitch, and I won the job that way.

She admitted feeling shocked that she booked the gig right away. “The idea that Scarlett would be delivering lines from something I wrote — I’m still pinching myself,” she mused. “I am convinced this is a really elaborate prank on me,” Gilroy quipped.

Scarlett Johansson Praises Rose Gilroy’s Fly Me to the Moon Script

Scarlett Johansson appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to talk about her latest project, Fly Me to the Moon. There she praised Rose Gilroy:

It was based on an original idea, and Rose Gilroy wrote the script, and she’s incredibly talented. She comes from a family of very talented screenwriters, and to me, it was such a unique, original concept. It has that old sort of nostalgic feeling I would say.

The Avengers actress revealed that what attracted her to the script was the feeling that it was “like a movie that you don’t get to see as much of anymore.” Indeed, the trend in cinema nowadays is filled with action blockbuster franchises and less romantic comedy films.

Fly Me to the Moon is set during the 1960s Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The film follows a NASA director, who is in charge of the Apollo 11 launch, and a marketing specialist, who is tasked to fix the agency’s public image, as they fall in love with each other.
