Milla Jovovich Issues Public Apology After Shaun King Fiasco

Being in the public eye is a double-edged sword. While celebrities are role models for people around the world, some of their actions can also have a detrimental effect on them. Hollywood star Milla Jovovich was in the middle of a controversy recently regarding her opinions on the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict which resulted in mass genocide.

The former supermodel sided with American journalist and activist Shaun King who was openly in favor of Palestine. King’s post on Facebook which read ‘fighting for Palestine’, was taken down by the social media site which also led to him being banned from Instagram. Jovovich was one of the celebrities who supported King and asked for his return to the platform.

Following her reaction, the Survivor star received a lot of criticism and backlash from netizens all over the world who called her out for backing anti-Semitism. In response, Jovovich deleted her post which expressed her support to King. In a statement on Reddit, the celebrity issued a public apology for hurting sentiments and said,

I deleted my last post about Shaun King because I realized that it brought pain to some of my nearest and dearest loved ones who feel he is anti-Semitic. I don’t know if he is or not, but I will never let politics draw a wedge between me and mine. I am so sorry to those I hurt. You know who you are and I love you dearly.”

Jovovich went on to add that she has never judged or discriminated people on the basis of caste, race, or religion, and will ensure that she continues to uphold these values throughout her life and career.

The action horror series Resident Evil based on the Japanese video game franchise by Capcom, made Milla Jovovich an overnight sensation. With 6 parts spanning over 15 years, Jovovich’s swashbuckling character Alice became a pioneering female protagonist who challenged many of her male action contemporaries. It also gave the former model cult status among fans.

Recalling her experiences working on the film and her character, Jovovich in an interview with Variety, elaborated on why she was excited to play the role over multiple films, and how she developed the nuances of the character in each sequel.

“I feel like Alice has grown so much. It’s so interesting to be able to go back and play the same character over and over. You’re definitely molding this person. But you have to let them breathe. It can’t just be you trying to infuse yourself into them all the time.”

The star also quoted Sigourney Weaver, who pioneered the rise of the female action star as early as the 80s, as her inspiration for Alice in Resident Evil.
