Michael Uslan, who acquired the film rights to Batman in 1979 and cemented his status as a cultural icon, spoke at the Cultural Summit in Abu Dhabi with his son and producing partner David Uslan.

Uslan senior is responsible for overseeing all subsequent Batman film adaptations, starting with the 1989 blockbuster simply titled Batman. It started with the critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning Joker (2019), not to mention several animated spin-offs.

Batman Takes Flight Around the World

Michael Uslan’s vision extended beyond Hollywood.  He recognized the potential for international interpretations of the Batman character, a strategy that has fueled the character’s global reach. This year will see the release of Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, a Spanish-language animated film specifically tailored to the South and Latin American market. Aztec Batman was produced in Mexico in partnership with Ánima and Chatrone.

However, a release date is yet to be announced for Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires).

This follows the success of 2018’s Batman Ninja, a Japanese animated film that transported the superhero back in time to feudal Japan, where he faced off against the Joker and his samurai henchmen. The film’s success sparked a localized franchise, emphasizing Batman’s versatility across different cultures and storytelling mediums.

The success of that film has spawned an entire new localised franchise of Batman in Japan. Batman Ninja was a very hardcore manga-anime adaptation but it worked wonderfully,” David Uslan said at the Cultural Summit

This success story fuels David Uslan’s belief that an Arabic version of Batman is on the horizon.

Building on this momentum, David Uslan confidently talked about an Arabic version of Batman on the horizon. He asserted:

I bet you before we know it there is going be a number of great brands around the world that are going to be doing whatever they can to have an impact here in the Mena region and especially in the UAE.”

The synopsis of the Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios says, “Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death.

Batman’s story continues to evolve, proving that even after 85 years, the Dark Knight can still find new adventures and resonate with audiences globally.
