Anne Hathaway may have had her breakthrough with The Princess Diaries, but the Academy-winning actress paved the way for her present-day success with her performance in Brokeback Mountain. The irony remains even though Ang Lee’s 2001 hit offered Hataway the much-required challenging role, she almost believed that her performance had risked the late Heath Ledger’s $176 million movie.

Anne Hathaway Left The Screening Of Brokeback Mountain

Anne Hathaway, a high-profile Princess of Hollywood, as one would like to call her, almost believed that she had tainted Brokeback Mountain, which eventually became the highest-grossing release for Focus Features, earning $178 million worldwide. During an interview, she revealed that she left the screening of Brokeback Mountain, stating:

“The movie was so beautiful, so perfect, I thought I would ruin it, so I left. I came back just in time to see a scene where my breasts were on screen, so that was special.”

The Devil Wears Prada star revealed that when she was offered this challenging role, she had almost given up on herself as an actress. “I just didn’t think I was any good and felt lost. I didn’t know how to communicate with people,” she added.

Along with her fears, came the pressure of starring alongside A-listers like late Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams. For Hathaway, the pressure of sticking out like a sore thumb was huge. On the contrary, the movie skyrocketed her career, allowing her to play a variety of genres, ranging from dramas to romantic comedies.

Anne Hathaway Has Second Thoughts About Acting

After Brokeback Mountain’s success, the actress went on to star alongside her co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal, in Love and Other Drugs. Her role as Maggie, a sexually overt free spirit, got people talking about a potential Oscar win. She received a Satellite Award for the $103 million film.

But again, the actress has second thoughts about her acting career despite all this success. In a backstage interview last year, Hathaway expressed:

“I think that the day I arrive on a set and I feel like I know what I’m doing and I have nothing left to learn is the day that I should do something else. There’s opportunity everywhere. There’s always an opportunity to learn and grow.”

Hathaway is married to jewelry designer, Adam Shulman since 2012 and shares two children with him. Since motherhood, Hathaway admitted to being when it comes to work. The actress has taken a small hiatus from acting to focus on her personal life.

Brokeback Mountain is currently available on Hulu.
