Actor Kevin Costner is well-known for his remarkable acting skills, however, he is also fond of music as he is the lead singer of the band Kevin Costner & Modern West, which was formed in 2007. The band is still active and has released four albums in the past 16 years.
The band kicked off its first worldwide tour in October 2007 and performed in some big cities around the globe. 2008 was a successful year for the band as they dropped their first album and received positive reviews from fans all over the world, however, a tragic event that took place in 2009 changed Costner’s life.
A thunderstorm caused the stage to collapse at Kevin Costner’s show
In 2009, actor Kevin Costner, who is the lead singer of the band Kevin Costner & Modern West, was on tour with his bandmates. They were all set to hit the stage at the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose, Alberta when a severe thunderstorm struck, causing the stage and stands on the main stage to collapse. The band members as well as the fans were trapped under the debris. A woman lost her life and 75 people got injured. Later, money was raised to support the two children of the woman.
The actor talked about the incident
In 2012, Costner talked about the incident in an interview with Toronto Star. The actor revealed that the tragedy made him realize “how precious life is.” He said,
“I came within a whisper of dying and two of my bandmates did too. The stage fell on me, it fell on them, and I was underneath it. It shows you how precious and how quickly life can be in the balance.”
Costner, who is 68 years old, formed the country rock band after his ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner, convinced him to follow his passion for music. In May 2023, Baumgartner, his wife of 18 years, filed for divorce based on “irreconcilable differences.”
Kevin Costner gained popularity in the 1980s
Throughout his career, Costner has starred in many TV shows and movies. He starred in 17 movies in the 1980s, however, only his portrayal of FBI Agent Eliot Ness in the 1987’s crime thriller The Untouchables made him a known name in the industry.
The shift in his career came in 1990 after he starred in and directed Dances with Wolves. The movie was a massive success, winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner. Even today, Costner remains a prominent figure and his work as an actor, director, and musician has left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.
